Here’s a breakdown of his match in episode 1 against Victor Barreto, which I think showcases his lasso guard game nicely.
After pulling guard AJ goes immediately for the lasso, working the hook in.
Opponent stands and gets swept
I particularly like AJ’s approach to dealing with the opponent when he stands up, which is something I find it hard to deal with myself, but AJ makes it look easy. Here you can see he’s got the lasso hook in, then when his opponent stands, he doesn’t abandon it, instead he grabs the opponent’s right heel with his right hand, as you would in a Reverse De La Riva position, but keeps the lasso hook in. He then hooks the opponent’s other leg behind the knee for a modified tripod sweep.
